WhatsApp and Twitter have released their monthly compliance reports indicating that they banned 45 lakh and 6.8 lakh accounts, respectively, in India in February. WhatsApp detected and proactively banned 1,298,000 accounts during the period. The moves were reportedly prompted by the new IT Rules 2021. Twitter also banned 1,548 accounts for promoting terrorism and received 73 complaints from Indian users, of which 27 were processed. Twitter overturned 10 of these account suspensions after reviewing them, but the remaining accounts remain suspended.
