Mass-market car companies are surfing the sunroof wave

Sunroofs are increasingly in demand by Indian car buyers, with mass-market manufacturers offering the feature in top versions of even basic models. SUVs and cars with the addition now account for up to 40% of the sales of some lower-end auto manufacturers. While the practicality of sunroofs during India's extreme weather is debatable, the perceived association with luxury and status is driving buyers to spend between ₹17,000 and ₹50,000 extra to add sunroofs to their vehicles. Laminated fixed sunroofs are also growing in popularity across all segments, increasing sunroof maker Saint-Gobain Sekurit's forecast sales of sunroofs in India by 50% in 2023.
